Social Media Creates New Businesses

Consumers add certain accessories to tangible products to personalize the overall look express their individuality.  In many instances, the right accessory brings out your personality. Many people look at what other people wear to unmask a hint about the true identity behind the fashionable façade.

A fairly recent accessory success was Jibbitz, the unique charms that fit into the holes of Crocs shoes. Rich and Sheri Schmelzer of Boulder, Colo. launched a website in August 2005. Within one year, Jibbitz had sold more than 8 million pieces worldwide. In December 2006, Jibbitz was acquired by Crocs for $10 million.

With the explosion of social media, which is a medium that is all about expressing individuality, entrepreneurs are developing accessories and complimentary products that leverage social media.  Three examples of this are:

Social Print Studio

Social Print Studio allows you to create posters from Facebook friends profile pictures, Facebook photo albums, Twitter followers avatars and Tumblr blog images. The pictures can also be printed as a special photo book or as small stickers so you carry your social life with you all the time.

The Facebook Book

The Facebook Book makes it possible to publish your Facebook history. This is a personalized book created from status updates, published pictures, wall messages and the comments shared between you and up to 10 hand-selected friends on Facebook. It even has a personalized cover with your Facebook name on it. The Facebook Book makes for a great coffee table book.

Map Envelope

This is the great way to say “wish you were here.” With the advent of Facebook Places and Google Maps, Map Envelope is a way to personalize an envelope. You enter a location and the inside of the envelope is printed with a map showing your location. Its really easy to create, you just enter your location and message. Then print, fold, stuff and send.

Special thanks to Hande Uckaleler for her valuable contribution on this subject.
