Facebook Connects Communities

Facebook is beta testing a new feature connecting people through communities. The mega-social network has implemented “Community Pages,” which takes your information, such as your college, favorite music/books and other interests listed in your profile, and links them to Community Pages of other Facebook users who also have this information listed in their profile.

Community Pages are dedicated to a particular topic or experience that is owned collectively by the community connected to it. Just like official Pages for businesses, organizations and public figures, Community Pages let you connect with others who share similar interests and experiences.

On each Community Page, Facebook users will be able to learn more about a topic or an experience—whether it’s traveling, John Mayer or Denver—and see what their friends and others in the Facebook community are saying about this topic. Community Pages are still in beta, but Facebook’s long-term goal is ‘to make them the best collection of shared knowledge on a topic.’

The Pages are starting by showing Wikipedia information, but Facebook is also looking for users who are passionate about any of these topics to sign up to contribute to the Pages. With these Community Pages, Facebook is trying to build a connection among users with similar interests.

Users have to opt-in to new connections. When logging in to Facebook, users will see a box appear that recommends Pages based on the interests and affiliations previously added to profiles. Users can connect to all these Pages—by clicking “Link All to My Profile”—or choose specific Pages. Once users make their choices, any text previously in a users profile for current city, hometown, education and work, and likes and interests sections of their profile will be replaced by links to these Pages.

The option to link to Community Pages is a great asset for businesses. A company can target desired audiences and market itself more effectively by using Community Pages on Facebook. By focusing on detailed demographic and interest information, businesses can create specialized advertising, marketing and public relations campaigns for Facebook. A business can even create campaigns to increase user support for their ideas and products directly from a Community Page.

The business use of a Community Page opens a new market. This application could be greatly beneficial for businesses in terms of target audience research and inexpensive advertising and marketing. Stay tuned.
